Illinois tops national economic development rankings

In 2024, Illinois ranked among the best in the nation in major economic development rankings. These developments coincide with nine credit rating upgrades over two years and a steady increase in GDP since 2020.

Highlights include:

  • #1 in Midwest for workforce development for the second consecutive year (Site Selection Magazine)
  • #2 state in the nation for corporate investments for the second year in a row, with Chicago clocking in as the Top Metro in the country for corporate investments for the 11th year in a row (Site Selection Magazine)
  • CNBC Rankings:
    • #4 in the nation for access to capital (up from #6 in ’23)
    • #5 in the nation for cost of living (up from #9 in ’23)
    • #6 in the nation for tech and innovation (up from #14 in ’23)
    • Moved up 15 spots in Best States for Business since 2018
  • Chicago voted Best Big City in the nation by readers for the eighth consecutive year (Condé Nast Traveler)

These rankings show Illinois has a burgeoning and thriving economy that is sure to climb even higher in the coming years.

Did you know there is a 3,000 mile long road that follows the entirety of the Mississippi River? This scenic route winds all the way from Lake Itasca in Minnesota, to Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico. Of all the territory the road covers, Illinois has by far the most picturesque stretch of the river.

Pro tip: the stretch of River Road between Alton and Grafton Illinois is unlike any other place in Illinois. This area is the confluence of the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois Rivers. Complete with a full view of the Mississippi and towering white cliffs, you would hardly think you were in the Midwest. There are many memorable stops along the way including the Loading Dock, Pere Marquette State Park, Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower, and Historic Downtown Alton.

Illinois is the top exporting state in the Midwest

Illinois has seen significant amounts of economic growth in 2024. In particular, Illinois doubled private investments from $6.3 billion in 2023 to $12.5 billion, quadrupling the number of retained jobs. Illinois also doubled company investments in the clean energy economy from $2 billion to $4 billion and achieved significant growth in key sectors including quantum computing, record-breaking tourism, and exports.

Aside from this, Illinois has grown to become the top exporting state in the Midwest. Additionally, Illinois is ranked fifth in the nation for its export sales. Illinois experienced another record-breaking year with export sales over $78.7 billion in 2023.

Illinois is home to many airports, railways, and shipping ports, which give companies a direct way to move their products all across the globe. Since 2019, Illinois exports have increased by 32%.

Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition returns for 39th year!

Did you know Illinois has a snow sculpting competition?

In 1985, two Rockford businessmen stumbled upon a snow sculpture that showed a winter carnival scene while snowmobiling through Wisconsin. After finding out who created the sculptures, the businessmen invited the artists to Rockford where they sculpted an American eagle, the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell, with the help of Rockford Park District staff.
