After years of anticipation, and a momentous grand opening ceremony, the Obama Presidential Center officially opened its doors on Chicago’s South Side on June 19. This is the second presidential museum in Illinois, the first being the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield.
Taking place in the heart of Jackson Park, the ceremony was attended my thousands including leaders from across Illinois and the country, three former presidents and first ladies, foreign dignitaries and a guest list often seen at Hollywood award shows including individuals from the music, film and television. With a number of musical performances and closing remarks from Barack and Michelle Obama, the ceremony highlighted the importance the democratic values that are the foundation of America.
The vibrant 19.3-acre campus was designed to inspire, empower, and connect people to change their world and features a diverse array of public spaces. Head to the museum to learn who shaped our democracy. Enjoy the natural beauty of the outdoors at the Women’s Garden, John Lewis Plaza, the Wetland Walk, and the Great Lawn. Stay active in Home Court, home to an NBA regulation size court and a variety of athletic spaces. Engage with new ideas in The Forum or the Chicago Public Library’s newest branch. The campus is located in Chicago at 6001 S. Stoney Island Ave and is open daily, free of charge, for all to enjoy from 6 a.m. - 9 p.m. Building hours may vary. The museum requires a general admission ticket that includes access to all four levels of the museum, access to the Oval Office and access to the Sky Room. Entry to the Museum is by timed ticket only. Every Tuesday, Illinois residents can visit the museum for free and tickets can be acquired online but are subject to available.
